The story

Mohandas Gandhi led a campaign of non-violent protest against British rule. In 1930 he walked about 385 km to the sea to make salt, breaking a British law that taxed it.

What happened next

India became independent on 15 August 1947. British India was split into India and Pakistan, and partition forced around 15 million people from their homes.

Remember

  • Jawaharlal Nehru became India’s first prime minister
  • Gandhi was killed in January 1948
  • His methods inspired Martin Luther King Jr.

Review question

Why did Gandhi march to the sea in 1930?

Answer: To make salt and break a British law. Salt was something everyone needed, so a tax on it was a powerful symbol of unfair rule.
